From Davos, Indonesia Targets Global Digital Investment Opportunities

Indonesia reaffirmed its position as one of Southeast Asia's leading digital economies during a panel discussion at the Indonesia Pavilion on the sidelines of the WEF Annual Meeting 2026. The panel, entitled "Indonesia's Digital Renaissance: Creating a Connected, Creative, and Competitive Economy," highlighted digital transformation as a key driver of national competitiveness and a catalyst for global investment amid global economic uncertainty.

Based on data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), Indonesia's internet penetration rate has reached more than 79 percent of the total population, underscoring the scale of Indonesia's digital market.

Digital transformation has become a key pillar of Indonesia's economic growth. Indonesia also has the largest digital economy in Southeast Asia, valued at around USD82 billion, and is projected to continue growing as digital technology adoption expands across sectors.

"The key words are order and balance. We cannot grow without trust, trust is a prerequisite for growth. Capabilities must be built before entering the commercial realm. And the direction must be set before capital is mobilized," explained Director General of Digital Ecosystem of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Erwin Hidayat Abdullah who spoke on the panel.

The discussion offered a comprehensive perspective on Indonesia's efforts to build an integrated, competitive, and sustainable digital ecosystem. In terms of policy, Erwin emphasized that the government continues to strengthen the regulatory framework to create a digital ecosystem that is safe and conducive to innovation.

The panel also featured cross-sector speakers representing key sectors of Indonesia's digital ecosystem, namely President Director of PT Telkom Indonesia, Tbk. Dian Siswarini, Chief Executive Officer of Grab Indonesia Neneng Goenadi, Vice Chairman for Foreign Relations of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Bernardino Vega, and moderator Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of South China Morning Post Tammy Tam.

"Connectivity is very important for digitalization. The main foundation for realizing good connectivity is the availability of comprehensive digital infrastructure," said Dian.

From the business perspective, Bernardino emphasized the importance of synergy between the Government and private sector in strengthening the attractiveness of digital investment.

"We have a lot of good policies. In digital investment, there are two types of digital inclusion. First, the process is already automated but still manual-based. Second, disbursement, which is a completely different process because the role of digital is much larger and more comprehensive," he said.

The panel discussion also emphasized that the growth of Indonesia's digital economy is aligned with the sustainable development agenda. Digitalization serves as an instrument to increase national productivity, expand economic inclusion, and strengthen the creative economy sector which is a key contributor to gross domestic product (GDP), as noted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

"Currently, one in four Indonesians has used online-based services, making digital services part of the DNA of Indonesian society. We provide services that reach all Indonesian people. With the infrastructure support provided by the government, we set a guiding principle for MSMEs, which is to ensure that our platform is accessible to all business actors at every stage of development, from starting, growing, and expanding their business," said Neneng.

The "Indonesia's Digital Renaissance" panel is part of a series of strategic discussions at the Indonesia Pavilion with the theme "Indonesia Endless Horizons". The pavilion, which aims to attract more investment and multi-sector cooperation, underscores Indonesia's commitment to advancing digital transformation through its large market, adaptive policies, and long-term commitments.
